Bloodline. David Bushnell

In 2006 my Uncle Bill, William Bushnell - informed my brothers, Steve, Rick and I that we are related to, on my mother Mary's side to:

- David Bushnell, (1740-1824) credited as the inventor of the submarine

His submerged vessel was first used to launch explosives against British ships during the American Revolution (1775-83). Great, Great, Great???, Grandpa David’s design – was named the “Turtle” perhaps because of its spherical form. To raise and submerge the vessel, the operator flooded the air-filled chamber with water, making it heavier or lighter as needed, to achieve the desired depth.

Bushnell’s contribution to Naval warfare launched submarine design worldwide – which has had a profound influence on both marine tactical offense and defense.

(Side note: Bushnell’s “Turtle”, (reptile) is hauntingly similar to the phrase “Turned Turtle” ( the inverted knock over and demise of a Mono-hull or Multi-hulled sailboat)
